What is family mediation?

Family mediation is a voluntary, confidential process where a trained, impartial mediator helps separating couples or families work through disagreements and reach their own agreements. Unlike going to court, you stay in control of the outcome — the mediator guides the conversation, but the decisions are yours.

Is mediation legally binding?

The agreements reached in mediation are not automatically legally binding. However, once both parties have received independent legal advice, the agreement can be made into a legally binding court order (a Consent Order).

Do I have to go to mediation before going to court?

In most family law cases in England and Wales, you are required to attend a Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting (MIAM) before applying to court. We can provide this assessment.

How many sessions will we need?

Most couples reach agreement within 3–5 joint sessions, though this varies depending on the complexity of the issues involved. Each session typically lasts 90 minutes.

Can we do mediation online?

Yes. We offer fully online mediation via secure video call, which many clients find more convenient and less stressful. Online sessions are just as effective as in-person meetings.

How much does mediation cost?

Most cases are resolved for between £1,500 and £3,000 in total — a fraction of the cost of court proceedings. We offer a free initial consultation, and fees are typically split equally between both parties.

Is everything discussed in mediation confidential?

Yes. Mediation is a confidential process. Nothing discussed in sessions can be used as evidence in court proceedings, and we will not share information with third parties without your consent.
